The Crescendo of Success Starts Here: Strategies for a Stellar First-Year Student Experience in Band

Clinic Synopsis:

Come away with techniques that you can implement in your beginner classroom to elevate the experience for yourself and your students. Your program can be full of musicians who are motivated, successful, and engaged, without ever using a practice card or chair test. We will discuss how to incorporate diverse performance experiences, an emphasis on artistry, and purposeful sequencing that will improve student learning outcomes, teacher satisfaction, and ultimately create a happier, healthier band.

Jennifer Bergeron - Biographical Information

Jennifer Bergeron is in her twentieth year of teaching and has been a band director at Walsh Middle School in Round Rock, Texas since 2012. The Walsh Band has performed at The Midwest Clinic, The Music for All National Concert Band Festival, PASIC, is recognized annually as a National Winner in the Foundation for Music Education’s Mark of Excellence Competition, and has individual students who excel at the district, state, and national levels of performance. Mrs. Bergeron is a frequent guest clinician and lecturer. Under Ms. Bergeron’s direction, the students at Walsh have multiple opportunities each year to participate in solo recitals and prolific chamber music program, as well as concert bands. She is honored to have the opportunity to share her passion for music and learning with the Walsh students each day and has the great pleasure of being supported by an outstanding staff who reflect the same desire to provide quality music education. Ms. Bergeron received her Bachelor of Music Education degree from Louisiana State University where she participated in numerous performing groups including the Wind Ensemble under the direction of Frank Wickes.

Stone Wang - Biographical Information

Stone Wang is a Texas native who grew up in Houston, Texas. He is the Assistant Band Director for the Walsh Middle School Band, a position he's held since 2020. Under his direction, the Walsh Middle School Symphonic Band has gotten consistent superior ratings in region level evaluations. Individual students of Mr. Wang excel at the district, state, and national levels of performance. Mr. Wang also assists with the Walsh Honor Band, conducting on their Midwest Clinic concert in 2021. Outside of Walsh, Mr. Wang's teaching experience includes a diverse range of students and ensembles. Mr. Wang has been a part of the Phantom Regiment Drum and Bugle Corps brass education staff since the 2019 Drum Corps International competitive season. Mr. Wang also regularly consults and spends time teaching leadership to students of all ages in the music world. He attended The University of Texas at Austin where he studied Horn under horn professor Pat Hughes and received his Bachelor degree in Music Studies. During his time at UT, Mr. Wang performed in many ensembles including the UT Wind Ensemble under the direction of Jerry Junkin.
