SHOP Talk: The 21st Century Cymbal Player

Clinic Synopsis:

I will discuss cymbal playing techniques and numerous choices a cymbal player has to make before the first rehearsal in concert preparation. I will play with recordings of the United States Marine Band performing a typical concert program. Today’s percussionist needs to wear many hats as composers relentlessly explore new sounds. Besides the challenge of playing over one thousand crashes during a concert is creating the most efficient set up to have success .

Glenn Paulson - Biographical Information

Glenn Paulson is the former timpanist of the Barcelona Symphony Orchestra, and has been a member of The American Symphony and the Bard Summer Music Festival. Glenn is currently a percussionist with “The President’s Own” United States Marine Band. He has made numerous television appearances, most recently on the PBS Great Performances Series as a soloist with the Los Angeles Philharmonic for a concert to honor John Williams. As a composer, he performed the world premiere of his composition Impending Storm in Washington DC in October 2015 and premiered his latest composition for cymbals and train sounds during his cymbal lab at Pasic in San Antonio this past November. He also presents master classes on "How the Marine Band Percussion Section Interprets and performs the Marches of John Phillip Sousa",and is a member of The Percussive Arts Society Symphonic Committee. He is a graduate of The Eastman School of Music and The Juilliard School.
