Grow and Cultivate Your Small School Band Program

Clinic Synopsis:

Small schools offer great opportunities to music educators. The Kings will explore how they were able to create a successful band program utilizing universal concepts that can be applied regardless of teaching situation.

Josh King - Biographical Information

Josh King serves as Director of Bands and Fine Arts for Beckville ISD. He holds two degrees from Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches and a Master of Educational Leadership from the University of Texas at Tyler. Mr. King is currently in his 16th year in education, having previously served the students of DeKalb ISD, Carlisle ISD, Rusk ISD, and Henderson ISD. During his tenure these band programs have been consistent UIL Sweepstakes Awards winners, UIL State Marching Contest participants, ATSSB Outstanding Performance State-level competitors, and have performed throughout the country at various festivals and contests. In 2012, the Carlisle Band was selected as the TMEA 1A Honor Band. During his tenure at Beckville ISD, Mr. King's bands have been consecutive UIL Award Winners, State Marching Contest Medalists, TMEA Honor Band Runner-up, and ATSSB OPS winners. Beckville has also been named one of NAMM's Best Communities in Music Education for the past four years. Mr. King is an active clinician, adjudicator, and performer. He has presented professional development clinics for the National Association of Military Marching Bands, Louisiana Music Educator's Association, Texas Music Educator’s Association, and Texas Band Master’s Association. His article entitled “Fostering the All-Around Band Student” was featured in TMEA’s publication, The Southwestern Musician, in 2014. Mr. King’s professional affiliations include ATSSB, TMEA, TBA, TMAA, NAMMB, Phi Mu Alpha, Kappa Kappa Psi, and Pi Kappa Lambda.

Michelle King - Biographical Information

Michelle King serves as the Head Junior High Band Director for Beckville ISD. She holds two degrees from Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches and a Master of Educational Leadership from the University of Texas at Tyler. Mrs. King is currently in his 18th year in education, having previously served the students of Hardin ISD, Queen City ISD, DeKalb ISD, Henderson ISD, Rusk ISD, and Carthage ISD. During her tenure these band programs have been consistent UIL Sweepstakes Awards winners, UIL State Marching Contest winners, ATSSB Outstanding Performance State-level award winners, TMEA Honor Bands, and have performed throughout the country at various festivals and contests. In 2022, Mrs. King’s Junior High band received the first superior rating in school history at UIL Concert and Sightreading assessment. Beckville has also been named one of NAMM's Best Communities in Music Education for the past four years. Mrs. King is an active clinician, adjudicator, and performer. She has presented professional development clinics for the Louisiana Music Educator's Association and Texas Music Educator’s Association. Mrs. King’s professional affiliations include ATSSB, TMEA, TBA, TMAA, NAMMB, Phi Mu Alpha, Tau Beta Sigma, Pi Kappa Lambda, and Women’s Band Director International.
